Eminent examples of the social outreach efforts of cultural institutions featured once more in the meeting of national experts. The shape of the ‘handbook’, which this group is tasked to produce, was a major preoccupation and advanced with the help of a ‘world café’ exercise. The work of the group in its current composition is due to draw to a close after only a couple more meetings.

3rd OMC expert group meeting - Accessible and inclusive culture, cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue

Organiser:  European Council

“Can access to culture be broadened in times of severe public funding cuts?” “Do the differences in the public funding systems for culture across the EU prevent useful recommendations on increasing participation in culture through policy measures?” These were some of the questions which experts from 16 EU countries raised at their third meeting to exchange examples of initiatives to increase participation in culture or access to culture.

2nd OMC expert group meeting - Accessible and inclusive culture, cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue

Organiser:  European Council

The Platform also followed the second meeting of the EU Council’s Expert Group on Accessible Culture and Intercultural Dialogue under the Open MEthod of Coordination (OMC). The national experts compared their answers to a survey conducted within the group. This had explored whether or how ‘access’, ‘participation’ and ‘public’ arts and cultural institutions are officially defined in Member States; whether there are declared goals to improve participation and build demand. Further questions were about target groups, the existence of statistics and indicators, and key initiatives.

EU Council’s Cultural Affairs Committee (CAC) meeting

Organiser:  European Council

The Platform for Intercultural Europe presented its work although Intercultural Dialogue does not appear on the agenda of this committee these days. Yet the Platform’s presentation generated the question whether CAC members can participate in Platform events. Moreover, our interest in seeing the 2008 Council Conclusions on Intercultural Competences revived found a positive echo.

1st OMC expert group meeting - Accessible and inclusive culture, cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue

Organiser:  European Council

The first meeting of the expert working group under the Open Method of Coordination set off to tackle the cultural access and participation of children, disabled people, the elderly, socio-economically disadvantaged people, etc. Probably only in 2012 will this group turn to the topics of intercultural dialogue and the cultural participation of migrants and ethnic minorities. Only then will the Platform for Intercultural Europe have a well-matched interlocutor in the EU Council.
