Its main objectives are described in art. 1 of its Statutes along with the Statutes of ETUC "Fight discrimination in all its forms with respect to gender, nationality, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity, age, religion and social origin in the European Union, in particular in the form of specific Directives implementing Article 13 on all grounds". It has been the most important Italian trade union since its creation. It has a national membership of over 5.5 million.

Membership in other European networks: CGIL is affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation and the European Trade Union Confederation, and is a member of the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD.

Collaboration with organisations in other European countries: CGIL has a special project of Trade Unions in European Capital Cities and many international cooperation projects in the field of anti-discrimination, lobbying for workers rights, etc.

Interest/involvement in European and EU political matters: European matters and political decisions are of fundamental political and social relevance to the activities of trade union movements, above all as migratory flows have affected so much the labour market in an international perspective. Much of the European funding strategies and lines (i.e. ESF et alia) have a strategic importance for the Italian labour market and for the promotion of equality and justice in the workplace.
